Description
These two great battles, both fought in 1862, changed the course of the war. In April, US Grant met Confederates under Albert Sydney Johnston near Cornith, Mississippi, on the Tennesse River, at Pittsburg Landing. Two important factors emerged from this battle: the reputation of US Grant was secured and the South lost its most capable commander, Albert Sydney Johnston, who was killed in this battle. Eventually, this would lead to the promotion of Robert E. Lee as commander of all the Confederate Armies. In September, 1862, Robert E. Lee invaded Maryland and met the Union army near the town of Sharpsburg, along the Antietem Creek. This battle became the bloodiest single day battle in the history of the United States but neither side could claim victory. President Lincoln used this "Union Victory" to propose to his cabinet the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in the Confederate States. This was issued on January 1, 1863. On February 29, 1864, US Grant was promoted to lead all the Union Armies against Robert E. Lee and the Confederate States.

David Bearden replied:
Robert, thanks very much...an interesting series of events that flowed from these two battles...these plus Gettysburg were three of the first battle fields to be preserved after the war and so are in almost pristine conditions...of course, Gettysburg had to beat down Disney from building an amusement park (I guess they would have included a special shooting gallery)...
